Welcome to the Sussex Ornithological Society Corn Bunting survey 2014.
In Sussex the Corn Bunting is a bird strongly associated with open chalk Downland and the coastal plains at either end of the County. It is a red-listed species of high conservation concern with a population in Sussex that has reduced since a high point in the 1970s.
In 1993 the BTO conducted a Farmland Bunting survey and in Sussex this was extended to a full breeding season survey of Corn Bunting. The SOS survey found a total of 660 singing males. Sussex is now estimated to have a county population of between 240-350 territories. Atlas records also reflect a decline. During the 1988-92 Atlas Corn Buntings were found in 19% of the county’s tetrads. By the 2008-2011 Atlas this figure had reduced to 12%.
The purpose of the 2014 survey in Sussex is to obtain more up to date information about breeding Corn Buntings by territory mapping of singing males.
